1. Can you please introduce yourself in detail (ex. major, MBTI, residence, hobby etc.)?

My name is Aubry Seery Wredle and I live in Uppsala in Sweden and I am a medical student from Uppsala University. I am currently studying the ninth semester out of eleven. I am interested in becoming either a pediatrician or an obstetrician/gynecologist in the future. In my free time I love to travel, paint, spend time in nature, read and spend time with my family and friends.

2. What was the reason you chose to do your observership at Hallym University Medical Center, and what motivated you to choose that specific department?

I have wanted to travel to South Korea for many years. It is such an interesting country and I have been eager to experience the cultural differences as well as try Korean food etc for a long time. Like previously mentioned, I am very interested in becoming either a pediatrician or a obstetrician/gynecologist in the future. I love kids and have worked a lot as a nursery teacher, spanish teacher and teacher´s assistant as well as an au pair before starting medical school. I do also find surgery very interesting. When the opportunity to travel to South Korea to do an observership at Hallym University Medical Center presented itself, and it was possible for me to do it within both those departments, I just had to apply!

3. What were the most memorable experiences or impressions you gained during your Hallym Observership?

I have so many memorable experiences and impressions from my time at Hallym. Both from the hospital and outside of the clinic. For example it was incredibly impressive to see all the professors and other doctors handle 20-45 patients in one session at their out-patient clinics. In Sweden, most of the time, doctors only take on 4-5 patients in one session. The doctors I got the honor of observing were incredibly effective and so knowledgeable. I was very impressed. Other very memorable experiences were that all the professors at Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital were so incredibly nice, welcoming and generous towards us. I really cannot thank them enough for how nicely they treated us. The professors treated us to so many lunches and dinners as well as took their time to explain both the medical systems as well as cultural things in Korea. It really made this observership so special. Thank you!

4. If you were to recommend Hallym Observership to colleagues from your home country, what aspects would you emphasize and recommend?

I would ephasize tht is a very valuabe experience as the medical system is very different from in Sweden and it is interesting to learn how things are done on the other side of the world. I would also tell them how welcoming everyone was and how nicely organized everything was. It was really easy to come and do my observership at Hallym as everything was organized so well.

5. What activities did you mostly engage in during your leisure time in Korea?

I spent many days exploring all the different areas of Seoul, visiting many tourist attractions and eating so much good food. I also attended many different festvals during the weekends.

6. What cultural differences did yo noice between Korea and your home country during your time here?

There are many cultural differences between Korea and Sweden. Too many to mention here. But I found that there are a lot more weight put into hierarchy in Korea then in Sweden. In Sweden we call everyone, even our professors, just by their first name and everything is very casual. In Korea it was interesting to see how different hierarchy worked and how important it is to show politeness in a certain way.

7. What was the most memorable place you visited during your time living in Korea?

I visited so many memorable places. I went on a guided tour to the DMZ which was very interesting and not at all what I was expecting. I also really enjoyed visiting and going up Namsan Mountain and visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace and renting Hanboks with our professor from Dongtan. I also attended a Korean Baseball game which was so much fun!

8. How do you think the experiences and knowledge you gained from Hallym Observership will impact your future?

It will impact how I think about my job as a doctor. It was so interesting to see how effectively all the doctors in Korea worked and I was inspired to take after them in my clinical work in the future. I will also be sure to visit Korea many more times as I really enjoyed my time here.

9. Could you please provide more details about the type of doctor you aspire to become in the future?

I want to become a detail oriented and kind doctor in the future. I hope I will be able to be become a pediatrician or obstetrician/gynecologist and be able to work with kids and women. I aspire to become a doctor who always does my best and has the necessary knowledge to treat all patients with the right kind of treatment to help them. I hope I will be able to do research and travel in my work. Hopefully I can come back and meet my amazing professors from Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital and Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital in the future as a doctor.

10. Could you please give a word to the future colleagues from your home country at Hallym University Medical Center?

I really recommend you to visit and do your observership at Hallym University Medical Center! You will learn a lot about medicine but most importantly you will get an amazing insight into how the medical system and doctors work in Korea. This knowledge will be valuable for you in your future profession. All the doctors and nurses and administrative personnel at Hallym are incredibly nice and helpful and they will make sure you have the best time if you decide to do your observership at Hallym!

11. Hallym Observership is excellent because OOO. Could you please fill in the blank with a word and provide more details about the reasons?

Hallym Observership is excellent because the doctors and professors really took the time and put effort into making sure I had the best time and learnt a lot. I am really very grateful for all their care and time. The time spent with them is the thing I will miss and remember the most from my observership at Hallym.
