The Joongang Ilbo Meets with Prof. Basso of Padova and Prof. Kim of Hallym on October 9, 2012.

Hallym University Medical Center hosted the 3rd Hallym-Padova International Symposium under the theme, “New Insights into Diagnosis and Management of Pediatric Diseases” at the Hanmaeum Hall in Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital on October 9, 2012.

Professor Giuseppe Basso, Director of the Hemato/Oncologic Clinic, Department of Woman’s and Child’s Health at University of Padova and Professor Kwang-Nam Kim of Pediatrics at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital shared their opinions on the Logical Diagnostic in Pediatric Leukemia and Prevalence of HLA-DRB1 alleles in Korean children with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is one the prospects for early detection and treatment of those rare chronic diseases.

Professor Basso introduced the Microarray technology that can offer the possibility of quantifying thousands of genes in a single analysis. This technology will be an essential tool for molecular classification in pediatric leukemic diagnosis. It has achieved 97% diagnostic accuracy in leukemic patients. Additionally it is possible to correctly classify some subgroups incorrectly identified using gold standard methods. Professor Kim told the differences of HLA-DRB1 alleles between the Korean children and European children in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

This article, titled “Microarray technology has achieved 97% of diagnostic accuracy in pediatric leukemia” was published in the Joongang Ilbo, one of major Korean dailies, on Oct 15, 2012.
